The math of roulette
Roulette probability and streaks
A previous spin does not change the next one on a fair wheel. Calculate a specified sequence separately from the chance of a streak appearing somewhere in a session.
Consecutive reds or blacks
If p is the one-spin chance of red, the chance of red on all n specified future spins is p^n. On European roulette, ten reds have probability (18/37)^10, about 0.07425%. Ten losses on a red wager instead use (19/37)^10.
At least one hit
The chance of at least one hit in n independent spins is 1 − (1 − p)^n. For one chosen number over ten European spins, use p = 1/37. This does not guarantee a hit after 37 spins.
A repeat versus a chosen repeat
A chosen number twice from before both spins is 1/37^2. Any same number on two spins is 37 × 1/37^2 = 1/37. Once the first number is known, a matching next spin is also 1/37.
Either color is a different event
All red or all black over n European spins has probability 2 × (18/37)^n, since these two sequences do not overlap. Any nonzero color on every spin instead has probability (36/37)^n and permits mixed colors.
Runs anywhere need a different model
A run of ten within 100 spins is not the same event as the next ten spins all being red. Overlapping runs cannot simply be added. Our sequence calculator deliberately handles a fixed block, not a run-anywhere calculation.
Odds of the same color in a row
| Spins | European | American | Triple zero | European, about |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 23.67% | 22.44% | 21.30% | 1 in 4 |
| 3 | 11.51% | 10.63% | 9.83% | 1 in 9 |
| 4 | 5.60% | 5.03% | 4.54% | 1 in 18 |
| 5 | 2.72% | 2.38% | 2.09% | 1 in 37 |
| 6 | 1.33% | 1.13% | 0.9666% | 1 in 75 |
| 7 | 0.6449% | 0.5351% | 0.4461% | 1 in 155 |
| 8 | 0.3137% | 0.2535% | 0.2059% | 1 in 319 |
| 9 | 0.1526% | 0.1201% | 0.09503% | 1 in 655 |
| 10 | 0.07425% | 0.05687% | 0.04386% | 1 in 1,347 |
| 12 | 0.01757% | 0.01276% | 0.009343% | 1 in 5,691 |
| 15 | 0.002023% | 0.001356% | 9.186 × 10^-4% | 1 in 49,424 |
For either color, double the single-color figure: 2 × (18/37)^n on a European wheel.
Odds of losing several times in a row
A red bet loses on 19 of 37 European pockets, so losing n times in a row has probability (19/37)^n.
| Losses in a row | European | American | European, about |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 13.54% | 14.58% | 1 in 7 |
| 5 | 3.57% | 4.04% | 1 in 28 |
| 6 | 1.83% | 2.13% | 1 in 55 |
| 7 | 0.9416% | 1.12% | 1 in 106 |
| 8 | 0.4835% | 0.5888% | 1 in 207 |
| 9 | 0.2483% | 0.3099% | 1 in 403 |
| 10 | 0.1275% | 0.1631% | 1 in 784 |
The Martingale roulette page shows why these streaks matter when stakes double after each loss.
